Don't forget the ongoing
work at Tejas:

Nicole Joncas from Tejas Rescue has been working for years to have this particular puppy mill shut down. Nicole has my deepest respect as I know how hard this fight has been for her. She has never given up and you can tell she is very driven and determined to end the misery of these innocent animals. I have placed Nicole's open letter here for you to read and spread the word for these innocent animals who can't speak for themselves - God bless you Nicole! To read her open letter ...>

Hello everyone,

Our appeal for the Constitutional Challenge of Bill 132 in Ontario, will be heard on Mon Sept 15 and Tues Sept 16 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, Osgoode Hall, 130 Queen St. West in Toronto. Room to be determined the Friday before.

We just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has stepped up to the plate and supported the Legal Challenge of one of the most significant threats to dog ownership in Canada.
The response to the CKC fund-raising initiative has been overwhelming!

As we move forward into the home stretch, funds are still desperately needed to continue.
Everything is greatly appreciated!

Meet Suzy

We'd like you to meet a very special little girl called Suzy.

Suzy is a special needs puppy who is scheduled to have one, and possibly both, of her eyes removed at the end of May. She was born with an abnormality in the eyes. One eye is almost sightless which causes her considerable pain, and the other is virtually dead. Suzy is much loved by her foster mom who is basically acting as her "seeing eye" companion. Suzy rarely leaves her "mom's" side so we would very much like her to stay where she is comfortable and safe. Our vet has estimated the initial surgery will be between $500 and $650 and, since Suzy suffers with chronic infection in her eyes, he may recommend that both be removed. This would put the bill even higher. We are sending out this appeal to raise funds for Suzy's surgery and would be grateful for any donations. More information...>

Balou

balouupdate.jpg (57061 bytes)

Have a look at this very handsome, very cute baby boy named Balou. Very cute, right? Take a closer look at the expression. Notice anything? This is the look of a "thinking, determined" young puppy. The look tells it all. He is saying, "hmmmmm, not sure what I think of this situation ... do I listen, and stay sitting and calm? or do I have better things to do? ... like perhaps some "counter surfing", perhaps some naughty behavior to pester my foster sister?

He loves everyone he sees, and more often than not forgets his manners and will knock someone over out of shear enthusiasm. Sometimes his enthusiasm gets overwhelming and he will start mouthing, a behaviour he must learn to change. He is a big boy and he knows it!

Balou would EXCEL in a sport that can release his energy and make him feel like he is working, as the Bull Mastiff/Bull Dog breed ARE working breeds. We think Balou would excel in weight-pull activities and he would love learning to pull a cart. These type of activities will help burn energy in a positive way, while providing him with exercise, socialization and a feeling of accomplishment and pride for Balou.

Balou will need an owner experienced with Bull Mastiff/Bull Dog breeds. These breeds can be a very determined canine and will need an owner that is responsible and willing to go to obedience with him and use positive reinforcement to help shape him into the ambassador he can be. We do not recommend Balou to a home with young children. If you think you can give Balou the home he needs, please contact us at anmlresq@hotmail.com.

OREO

  oreo2.jpg (47024 bytes)

I've come a long way to find my forever home, and I'm ready! My charm, good looks and all around wonderful disposition have landed me a great foster family, where I live with other dogs, a cat, and young kids - I love them all and they love me!

I'm about 5 to 6 years young, in great health and ready to run! I get so excited when my family comes home - I run in circles and hop on my hind legs; I've even heard them use the term "circus act", whatever that means.

My ideal home would play with me (I have lots of toys here!), give me loads of attention, take me on walkies (oooooh, I love those!) and snuggle when we're all bushed. And in return I will provide you with hours of entertainment, try my hardest to never pee in the house (my foster mum says I'm excellent at holding it), sleep in my crate and not even whine about it, and give you all the love and companionship one could ever need.

Please contact the good people at ANML-RESQ for more information on me. I'm waiting to hear from you. Woof!

Doggy Recipe for April

These are frozen and can be made softer or harder depending on how good the dog is at "excavating" the Kong. The frozen recipes can also be put into ice cube trays or other containers.

Fruity Yogurt Treats
2 kiwi fruit -- mashed (or jar baby food fruit)
8 ounces strawberry yogurt -- or other
Mix together, freeze in Kong or ice cube tray. Serve.

When filling Kongs, you'll need to plug up the smaller hole if the filling is liquidy, so it doesn't fall out. You can also plug the larger hole to make it harder for the dog to get the filling out. Some things you can use to plug the holes: a grape or piece of another type of fruit, cheese, dog treats, peanut butter, veggies, or anything else that will fit. You can also add dog biscuits, fruit, or veggies (or whatever your dog likes) to the Kong along with one of the recipes below, to make layers or mix in.

Have a great KONG recipe - send it to anmlresq@hotmail.com - we will feature it here!

Dear Sassy:

How did you feel about the animal cruelty law that the MP's voted on - Bill S-203?

Concerned in Grey Bruce

=========================

Dear Concerned in Grey Bruce:

I am very disappointed with the outcome of the animal cruelty vote.  I cannot believe our MP's voted in this draconian law.  Bill S-203 was passed AGAIN after much opposition by animal welfare groups.  This Bill does NOTHING to protect animals from cruelty and abuse.  This law was enacted over 100 yrs. ago and our parliament chose to pass it without the changes that are so badly needed to protect us.  They should be ashamed of themselves.

Here are some facts:

  • Canada is alone in offering virtually no protection for wild and stray animals
  • Canada ’s legislation does not include a clear definition of ‘animal’ while other countries are explicit
  • Canada is the only country that does not provide protection for animals being trained to fight each other
  • Canada is the only country that makes is virtually impossible to prosecute cases of neglect.

Bill S-203 does nothing to improve our animal cruelty laws and make them internationally relevant and is not what the vast majority of Canadians want.

  • S-203 allows animal abusers to walk free
  • S-203 allows cruelty to wildlife, stray and feral animals
  • S-203 allows crimes of neglect to go virtually unpunished
  • S-203 allows the cruel reality of breeding and training of dogs for dog fighting

Do you know how YOUR member of parliament voted?  Find out here www.dontbecruel.ca.

It's now time to ask your member of parliament how they voted on this issue.  We must send them a CLEAR message.  This Bill is ancient and must be revisited and SOON, before more innocent lives are lost and cruelty and abuse are ignored by the very organizations that should be protecting us.

I hope this answers your question...
