ANML-RESQ sends a huge THANK YOU to Nathan Cave for your hard work and fundraising efforts to help the animals in our care.

This young 8 year. old boy saw our poster at our favourite pet store, 'Spoil Me Pets' in Mount Forest and told his mom he wanted to help the animals. Nathan set-up a donation jar and poster at the end of his lane and had money collected when someone STOLE the donation jar.

I am sure Nathan was heartbroken, but he did not let this despicable act deter him. Nathan, determined to help, decided to go door-to-door to collect funds for his friends at Anml-Resq.

Thank you Nathan from ALL your friends at ANML-RESQ!!!!!

Don't forget the ongoing
work at Tejas:

Nicole Joncas from Tejas Rescue has been working for years to have this particular puppy mill shut down. Nicole has my deepest respect as I know how hard this fight has been for her. She has never given up and you can tell she is very driven and determined to end the misery of these innocent animals. I have placed Nicole's open letter here for you to read and spread the word for these innocent animals who can't speak for themselves - God bless you Nicole! To read her open letter ...>

Hello everyone,

Our appeal for the Constitutional Challenge of Bill 132 in Ontario, will be heard on Mon Sept 15 and Tues Sept 16 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, Osgoode Hall, 130 Queen St. West in Toronto. Room to be determined the Friday before. We just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has stepped up to the plate and supported the Legal Challenge of one of the most significant threats to dog ownership in Canada. The response to the CKC fund-raising initiative has been overwhelming!

As we move forward into the home stretch, funds are still desperately needed to continue. Everything is greatly appreciated!

POISON ALERT:

Warning to all dog owners - Packages of sugar-free gum containing xylitol - can be deadly for dogs! If your dog gets into sugar-free gum with xylotil ensure you take your dog to the vet. The xylitol causes dogs to secrete insulin so their blood sugar drops very quickly and if that happens next is liver failure. Even with aggressive treatment, it can be difficult to save them. Vets are just learning about this. Please let others know about xylitol and dogs. It may save their life.

Don't leave your purse unattended, put candies, medications and gum up and away from your animals. Remember, if it's pleasant for you - it's pleasant for them.  Keep your animals safe!

Bill 50: An Act to amend the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act

Last week, Bill 50 [which is going to FINAL READING AND LAW on September 22, 2008] was being discussed by a Standing Committee who was charged to "consider the method of proceeding on Bill 50" with input from 5 Ontario cities. The Bill in it's present form is just a means with which the OSPCA will have more power when using their authority day-to-day.

Bill 50: An Act to amend the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act

If passed, Bill 50, will give the OSPCA police powers within Ontario [warrantless entry without Police Officers present]. This is not a Bill that will affect hunters and fishers, but rather would be a Bill that would touch the lives of people who own pets and livestock.

This Bill does not help captive animals in roadside zoos, public zoos, research animals, nor does it alleviate the euthanasia that is carried out in Ontario year after year because of pet over-population.

This fight is not over yet, we must let our voices be heard. We will be putting information together to help stop the THIRD and FINAL READING of this Bill and for this, we need your help to do this. When we have this information, we will let you know how you can help us ensure this Bill never gets to the House, in it's present format, for FINAL READING. We will keep you posted...

Dog Adoption of the Month - Jamie

Jamie is a wonderful boy who is looking for his forever home. He can be a high-energy boy when he gets excited, but he can also be a quiet, relaxed little couch potatoe. Jamie is a very loving dog that will give you 100% of his attention and affection.

Jamie seems to get along with most female dogs, however Jamie would prefer to be your one and only. He is a beautiful steel grey, very slight brindle in colour. In pictures, he looks black, however he is very unique in colour.

Jamie needs some work on leash and we are working on that. He has proven to be good when left alone for short periods of time. He is not destructive. Because Jamie is high-energy and still young at heart, we do not recommend him to a home with small children. If you would like to make Jamie your one and only, please contact us at anmlresq@hotmail.com or fill out the adoption application on the left.

August Happy Tail - Sykes

When the email came in - we were on it - Sykes a beautiful black and white pit bull who needed to get out-of-province.

We coordinated our efforts with our new group ANML-RESQ NB. Sykes was neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. Then off he went to his foster family in New Brunswick. From there, Sykes was adopted to a wonderful family.

Here is what Sykes' new family said:

Hi Renee, Everything is great here at the all Sykes place. We just love him and he has A LOT of big love to give back. He is so funny and loving that how could you not love him. He is also very smart and has great manners.

He and I go for our evening vehicle ride where if I need to go in the vehicle without him I actually have to hide the keys or he has to come.

The toy that Heather and her husband showed us is fabulous, the flirt pole, it is a great invention and Sykes just loves it. Sykes also plays with my 8 year old boy and even though Sykes is much larger I could not ask for a more gentle play partner for him. My daughter Brooke does the long cuddle and talk sessions. She says that she wants to share her secrets with Sykes but since he is close with me she says he might tell.

He has really made a large impression on us and we love every big bit of this big boy. Thank you so much for all the great things you do if it was not for you guys we would not have another great family member

We are all so happy about this tail ... it just makes you want to wag all over!

Dear SassyWhat do you think about the dog training shows which are getting more and more about show-biz rather than proper training? I don't watch many but the one called "At The End of My Leash" really bugs me 'coz now the guy is sorting out family problems. Is there any particular book or trainer you would prefer us to know about? ~ Linda

Dear Linda,

I have heard a lot of talk these days about two shows on television and usually any time people get into a discussion about the shows the conversations can turn very heated. Not everyone agrees on methods and not everyone agrees that "what they see, is what they get" on these television shows, but I have watched both shows. I know what you're saying about these dog trainers who go into people's homes to fix their dogs and end up that more often than not, it's NOT the dogs fault ... rather it's the owners.

Dogs, in my opinion, are very, very smart. If they can get away with something, they will.  If they can manipulate you, they will! Dogs, like children can sense when they can conquer and divide their owners. If they are allowed to continue, the dogs WILL rule the house. When it comes to training, EVERYONE in the family must be on-side and ready to work hard, if they want to help their dog, whether to become a good canine citizen or to overcome some bad behaviour. If all family members are not on-board it can sabotage any attempts to help your beloved pet overcome their behavioural issues.

I guess, when you really think about it ... people need to be fixed first, before their dog can be. Sometimes Brad Pattison can get "in your face" and often times that will turn people off, but when it comes down to it he is usually right in his perception of what is REALLY going on in the household.

Just keep one thing in mind everyone! These TV shows are great and give some very good advise, HOWEVER, the behaviours are NOT changed in the time you watch that 1/2 hour show. There are many cuts, edits and out-takes for one show. There is a lot of work that goes into training a dog and you must be very patient AND, of course, CONSISTENT!

With that said, here are just a few of my mom's FAVOURITE books on training.

  • The Power of Positive Training by Pat Miller

  • Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor

  • Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt

And another couple of great books for your reading pleasure, not training books, but mom's all-time fav's:

  • The Dog Who Loved Too Much by Dr. Nicholas Dodman

  • Redemption by Nathan Winograd
