OCTOBER 2008 Newsletter Welcome to the August edition of the ANML-RESQ Newsletter. In this Edition:
Diamond is a beautiful 4 year old Rottweiler girl, looking for her forever home. She was surrendered to the shelter by her young owner and was stressing badly. Not only that, but her time was running out and she needed to find quick refuge. We cross-posted like mad, and on the Friday morning, we were blessed with a foster home that offered to take Diamond in.
While transporting her, our volunteers noticed Diamond looked like she may be pregnant, but we have since found from the vet that she was not pregnant, but very recently had a litter. She was checked over thoroughly by the vet and given a clean bill of health. We are very happy to hear that. She will soon be spayed and ready to go a new home. Diamond is a very social and friendly girl with both men and women. Her whole back end is in motion when she greets you. She has never been exposed to children, so we recommend no children under the age of 12. Diamond has not had much exposure to other dogs, but we feel she would do well with a larger male. She is not good with small dogs or cats.
If you think you can provide Diamond with a responsible and loving home, please visit our website and fill in our on-line application. This little gem has been patiently waiting for her new family to find her. Pit
Bull Ban http://www.ontariocourts.on.ca/decisions/2008/october/2008ONCA0718.pdf We will, however, carry on fighting and I hope we can take it to the highest court in the land ... the Supreme Court of Canada. We can't stop fighting now for what we know is right. I have submitted a wonderful article, written by Angela Gilbert and posted on Wag the Dog Blog. What Angela writes about is entirely true and an insightful look at what the future has in store for dog owners in Ontario. We MUST do something about this discriminatory law now, before the government starts adding more and more breeds to their banned list. Think this can't happen? THINK AGAIN!!! http://wagthedog.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2008/10/27/3949287.html#comments October Adoption of
the Month - Jamie After we discovered, two days after taking Jamie and Sassy in, Jamie fell very ill, very quickly. After fostering 24 puppies, mostly bullies, I knew Jamie's behaviour after the second day was not that of a normal puppy. He and Sassy played and wrestled and wore each other out, every day. They ate like each meal was their last, but the third day was different ... Jamie wasn't interested in food or play. ALL he wanted to do was sleep. I couldn't even get him to drink. Something was WAY wrong and thankfully, we had a vet appointment for the following day. That was when my world fell apart. I told the vet about his strange behaviour and first thing she wanted to do was test him for parvo. I consented immediately, never dreaming he would test positive. I had to leave Jamie at the vets and I returned home in a daze. I worried about Sassy and sure enough a couple of days later, she also fell ill with the disease. It was a stressful 7 days, waiting for my babies to return, but I realized quickly, that the hard part was yet to begin. 14 days of isolation. They could not come near my other dogs as vaccinated or not, Rottweilers are highly susceptible to parvo. Four times a day of feeding, taking the puppies out for playtime in their isolation area, then sleep time for them. Then strip down my clothing and shoes, enter my home, shower and do laundry, tend to my crew, cook and back to see the babies. We had a baby monitor hooked up, so the moment they stirred, I was back out there with them. I watched them get stronger and stronger every day and couldn't wait to reunited them with all the rest of my furkids. It wasn't soon after recovery that Jamie went to his new home. He lived there happily and was well loved, however, due to his breed and fear of neighbours causing problems, Jamie was returned back to our rescue. My heart broke for my little boy. We welcomed him back with open arms, even though he couldn't be an integral part of the family. Our pack is pretty well established and while we chose playmates and playtime carefully, we couldn't completely integrate him into our family. This laid very heavy on my heart as I knew Jamie deserved more. He deserved a family of his own that he could have full access to. He deserved to have a couch to cuddle on full-time and a bed to snuggle in with his people. I am so thrilled to announce that Jamie has finally found that home. He lives with his new mom and dad, Ayla and Paul and the lucky boy has struck it big!! His dad Paul takes him running/jogging and Jamie goes with dad as often as he can.
Jamie is the one and only furkid in the family and he is loving every minute of being doted on. Even Jamie's grandma and grandpa love him!! What more could you ask for (-: I am so happy for Sir James. We can't wait for pictures and updates and I will soon be stopping by for a visit. That's the best part!!! He isn't that far from me - yippee!!!!! Here is a picture of Jamie with his new mom and dad. Good luck Jamie!! You will always have a special place in my heart. Rambo His owner decided to hire a lawyer and Rambo was in the fight for his life!! He was spared less than 1/2 hour a day of human companionship and lulled the days, then months away, wishing for freedom. Well, that day finally came when through the help of a wonderful Councilwoman and a dedicated owner, willing to fight for his life...his life WAS spared and he was flown to a foster home, out of province to begin his new life. Muzzle-free and free of the hostile discrimination of a province that condemns certain dogs with a certain appearance to death. Congratulations Rambo!! You deserve this chance you show the world that you are a happy, loving boy, with a zest for life and the courage to fight for it. Pumpkinfest We also had a garage sale in Oshawa. Many thanks to Sharon and Dulce for manning the sale and thank you to everyone that stopped in made a contribution to a great cause. Great

Thank You She is always thinking of ways to help our rescued animals and Denise has been one of our biggest supporters. Denise heard about our boy Chester and how we needed to raise funds to help with the high cost of medical bills. She took it upon herself to bake up a storm and do a fundraising bake sale on behalf of Chester's fund. Denise set up her table in front of her store and the kind people of Mount Forest gave generously. Much to everyone's dismay and heartbreak, while Denise tended to a customer in the store, someone stole the donation jar and all the monies collected from her bake sale. Denise was heartbroken, as were we all. This, however, did not deter Denise. Instead, she continued her bake-sale for the remainder of the day and also extended it to Saturday. Denise called the local paper to let them know what happened. The following week, the paper, The Mount Forest Confederate, ran the story and the outpouring of donations was heartwarming. A HUGE thank you to Denise at Spoil Me Pets for always helping the animals in need and many thanks to the kind people of Mount Forest for your kindness and generosity. Recipe for October
Mix ingredients with a strong spoon; drop heaping tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a 350 oven for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and leave cookies on baking sheet in the oven overnight to dry out. Yield: about 4 dozen dog cookies. Have a great recipe - send it to anmlresq@hotmail.com - we will feature it here! Ask Sassy
Dear Sassy: Why should people seriously consider what breed of dog they adopt? What Many of the herding breeds are high-energy breeds that MUST have a job or they can re-direct their energies. This can make them develop bad habits that will be hard to break later in life and also make their behaviour unacceptable. So herding/working breeds need to work or they will take out their pent-up frustrations elsewhere. Hunting breeds are another different breed ... owners must be aware of this breed and their needs. Their need to hunt ... nose to the ground. Again, an energetic breed. They need lots of exercise. Guardian breeds must have an owner that is responsible and understanding of this breed and their needs as well. Those owners need to be pack leaders that respect and understand the responsibility of owning such a powerful breed. Please be sure to do your homework. If you prepare and understand your new companion, and give them what they need, there will be less chance of having to re-home them later. --------------- Have a question for Sassy, please email your question to anmlresq@hotmail.com.
